ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern announced its winners of the annual Eagle Award on Wednesday as part of a special Student Awards Chapel. The 2016-17 winners were women's tennis' Karen Moe and Cody Sprenger of the men's basketball team.
The Eagle Award is an annual honor given to a standout male and female that recognizes academic honors and achievement, athletic accomplishment, and ministry involvement. 2017 represents the 23rd straight year that the university's athletics department has distributed the Eagle Award.
Moe has been a four-year member of the UNW women's tennis team. The Fargo, N.D., native is the reigning UMAC Player of the Year and helped the Eagles to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016. Moe's impact stretches far beyond the tennis courts, as she has been a two-year residence life ministry partner, Union Gospel Mission Dental Clinic Office volunteer and FCA Leadership Camp Huddle Leader. She is currently 28-0 on the year is ranked 15th by the ITA in the Central Region. The three-time NCCAA All-American – who is majoring in biology – will graduate as Northwestern's all-time winningest tennis player.
Sprenger was a four-year member of the UNW men's basketball team, where he helped the Eagles to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. He also competed for the men's track and field team during his freshman season, where he raced to the second-fastest 400-meter time in school history. He took home numerous UMAC postseason awards for his outstanding play, while also making a huge impact on campus and in the community. He is an active volunteer with Special Olympics, the Jerry Gamble Boys and Girls Club, Special Education School in St. Cloud and also served on the men's basketball team's mission trip to Spain last May.
