MORRIS, Minn.—The University of Northwestern men had a successful weekend at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Track & Field Outdoor Championships. Many top five finishes were seen in several categories while the Eagles won three events. UNW finished third overall for the two-day, five team competition and set a few personal records along the way.
Meet Results Northwestern swept the top three spots in the 400 meter dash;
Kyle Anenson (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) crossed the finish line first with a time of 51.37, followed closely by teammates
Spencer Steel (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Homeschool) and
Teddy Friedman (Becker, Minn./Becker) in second (51.70) and third (52.67).
Jordan Spahr (Pine City, Minn./Pine City) and
Jacob Fettig (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) took sixth (11.70) and eighth (11.95) places, respectively, in the 100 meter dash, with both men setting new personal records. Steel was the third man across the line in the 200 meter dash in a mere 23.18 seconds, which was a new personal record, with Friedman on his heels in fifth at 23.95 ticks.
Connor Wohlenhaus (Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) placed third in the 110 meter hurdles (16.01) before joining Anenson in the 400 meter hurdles. Wohlenhaus was third in that event, crossing the finish line at 56.97, while Anenson was and fourth (58.40) as both set new personal records.
Wil Maki (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) was also an individual champion as the freshman conquered the 800 meter run in 1:56.20, less than one second off of the UNW school record. Maki then placed third in the 1500 meter run in 4:12.17 with Nick Lubben placed fifth in the same event (4:26.99). Maki then anchored the first place-winning 4 x 800 relay team consisting of
Steve Baridon (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Waterloo West), Lubben, and Quin Prescott (8:20.62).
In the field events,
Baruch Fischer (Silver Bay, Minn./William M Kelly HS) took third in the shot put with a throw of 13.5 meters (44.3 feet);
Ayeir Karnwie-Tuah (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) threw for fifth in the same event with a throw of 12.63 meters (41.1 feet). Fischer was a ninth-place finisher in the hammer throw with a toss of 33.81 meters (110 feet), with
Hayden Larson (Afton, Minn./Homeschool)'s toss of 33.14 (108.1 feet) close behind in 10th.
Chris Compton (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) came in second in the discus with a throw of 40.32 meters (132.03 feet).
Overall, Northwestern had 23 career-best performances in the UMAC's new two-day championship format. The College of St. Scholastica won the meet with 239 points, well ahead of the Eagles' 107. Minnesota Morris (119 points) was in between at second place.
Northwestern is scheduled to run again next Friday at the Eagle Open meet hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
